Getting to Buvuma
Buvuma District is conveniently accessible, located just a three-hour drive from Entebbe International Airport and a one-hour drive from the source of the Nile in Jinja. Visitors can take a ferry from Kiyindi landing site in Buikwe District to the Kirongo landing site in Buvuma. For more flexibility, private and public boats are also available for hire. In just 35 minutes across Lake Victoria, you head to Buvuma Main Island, a quietly awakening piece of paradise on Uganda’s map, not for the usual reasons, but because of something new: Tourism and Palm oil.
The ferry to Buvuma Island is free, a government service, and only plies at specific times: 4 return trips on Monday and Friday, 3 on other days except on Sunday and carries a limited number of vehicles that are selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
Islanders have mastered the art of punctuality because missing a ferry means hours of delay or digging deep into your pocket for a boat hire. So if you are to pay a visit to Buvuma, time management should be your first priority.
You are required to travel with an Identification Document to register on the manifest, and the Uganda Police manages tight security onboard.
